Iodine - To Supplement or not to Supplement?
There is a lot of buzz about iodine in the thyroid community. Some articles found on the internet suggest supplements containing huge amounts of iodine, while others warn again iodine excess.
In reality, the thyroid gland requires a balanced amount of iodine. Iodine deficiency is a current public health concern, as it can contribute to mental impairment during pregnancy and early childhood. During these times, iodine excess can result in hypothyroidism or can trigger an immune reaction leading to Graves’ disease.
Research as shown that though older infants and children can adapt to too much iodine intake in their diet, iodine intake should be closely monitored because young infants are vulnerable to iodine excess and could develop hypothyroidism.
